Market Potential of Ultrafiltration
Ultrafiltration is a genuinely multi-purpose method of water treatment. Its primary fields of application include drinking water treatment and the purification of waste water, process water and water for industrial use. Combined with other methods, particularly reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration is also increasingly used in sea water desalination. It also features in swimming pool environments in combination with chemical processes.
Ultrafiltration is primarily employed by industrial concerns and municipal utility companies, though it is also used to treat water at the point of use, such as in homes, restaurants and hotels.
Independent market research studies predict that membrane-based treatment technologies will achieve an overall global market volume of US$ 3.2 billion in 2016, a figure that includes reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration and other membrane methods (source: Water Technology Markets 2010, GWI).
